The Wiki Education Philippines program of the PhilWiki Community reached another significant milestone during Bikol WikiConference 2026, a three-day conference held from May 29 to 31, 2026, at the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) and co-hosted by the City Government of Naga. Organized in partnership with the Bikol Wikipedia Community, Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement Inc., and other academic and cultural institutions, the conference brought together educators, researchers, students, writers, cultural workers, government officials, and Wikimedians to explore how Wikimedia projects continue to transform education, preserve Philippine languages, and strengthen open knowledge initiatives.

Carrying the theme “Advancing Language and Culture in the Digital Age,” the conference celebrated nearly two decades of Bikol Wikipedia while providing a platform for discussions on the future of Wiki Education in the Philippines. More than a gathering of volunteer editors, the event demonstrated how Wikipedia and its sister projects have become valuable educational tools that promote research, collaboration, digital literacy, and community engagement.

During the opening program, CBSUA Pili Campus Administrator Dr. Allan Del Rosario welcomed participants and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to promoting open educational resources through partnerships with educational and cultural institutions. The university also presented its CBSUA Wiki Education 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, outlining long-term initiatives to integrate Wikimedia into teaching and learning, expand collaborations with local communities, and promote Philippine languages through open knowledge.

One of the conference highlights was the plenary session “Tracing Two Decades of Growth: Milestones, Challenges, and the Evolution of Bikol Wikipedia,” where Bikol Wikipedia administrator Irvin Sto. Tomas reflected on the project’s achievements since its establishment in 2007. The presentation examined the continuing growth of Bikol Wikipedia, the challenges of developing high-quality regional-language content, and the importance of ensuring that local knowledge remains visible and accessible in the digital age.

Sto. Tomas also presented “Revitalizing WikiProyekto Literaturang Bikolnon,” which explored how Wikimedia projects support the preservation and revitalization of indigenous and regional languages by creating freely accessible digital resources on Bikol literature and culture. The session highlighted the role of volunteers, educators, and cultural advocates in documenting local knowledge for future generations.

As this year’s host institution, CBSUA showcased its expanding Wiki Education Program, which integrates Wikipedia editing into classroom instruction, extension programs, and student organizations. Through these initiatives, students gain practical experience in research, academic writing, information verification, and digital citizenship while contributing knowledge that benefits readers worldwide. CBSUA Calabanga Campus Administrator Dr. Jeremy Doloso emphasized the need to cultivate more writers, editors, translators, and researchers who can contribute to the continued growth of Bikol languages and literature.

The conference also highlighted the growing partnership between the PhilWiki Community and higher education institutions across the Philippines. Collaborative initiatives have resulted in the establishment of student Wiki Clubs, Wikipedia training workshops, edit-a-thons, translation projects, and outreach activities that encourage learners to become active contributors to free knowledge rather than simply consumers of online information.

In the plenary session “Wikifying CBSUA: The Wiki Education Blueprint in the Philippines,” Jerome Hipolito demonstrated how Wikimedia activities have been successfully embedded into academic programs, showing that Wikipedia editing has evolved into an authentic learning experience that develops students’ critical thinking, research, writing, and digital literacy skills.

Another session, led by Leah Sumalinog, introduced participants to “Five Ways Academics Can Contribute to Bikol Wikipedia,” encouraging educators to integrate Wikipedia into teaching, improve freely accessible scholarly content, mentor student editors, and strengthen connections between academic research and public knowledge.

Language preservation remained central throughout the conference. Co-hosted by the City Government of Naga, the event featured lectures, workshops, edit-a-thons, and panel discussions covering Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wikimedia Commons, and Wiktionary. Heritage advocate Bernadette Roco highlighted Naga City’s continuing role in supporting the free knowledge movement and promoting the Bikol language through digital platforms.

Building on the partnership established during Bikol WikiConference 2023, representatives from the City Government of Naga reaffirmed their commitment to promoting local culture and participatory governance through open knowledge initiatives. Local officials emphasized the value of collaboration among educational institutions, local governments, and volunteer communities in preserving regional heritage.

The conference also recognized outstanding community contributions. The Cararayan National High School Wiki Club received recognition from the PhilWiki Community for its exemplary work in promoting free knowledge, digital literacy, youth participation, and community engagement through the Wiki Education Philippines program. Meanwhile, the University of Nueva Caceres Wiki Club shared its experiences in building sustainable Wikimedia communities beyond editing events.

Copyright and cultural documentation were likewise addressed during the lecture “Freedom of Panorama: From the Outside Looking In,” delivered by Atty. Winstoney Marie S.A. Salceda-Mazo, UAP, who emphasized the importance of balancing cultural heritage documentation with respect for intellectual property rights while promoting access to free knowledge.

Translation and publishing also formed a major component of the conference. In partnership with Parasurat Bikolnon, StoryWeaver, and Towfee Publishing House, participants joined the Hablon-Usipon Children’s Book Translation Workshop, demonstrating how translating children’s literature into Philippine languages supports literacy, language preservation, and broader access to educational materials.

Beyond technical editing skills, Bikol WikiConference 2026 created opportunities for meaningful conversations on sustaining Wikimedia communities. Panel discussions explored volunteer burnout, community retention, GLAM partnerships, educational outreach, and strategies for improving the quality of regional-language Wikimedia content. Participants exchanged experiences from across the Philippines and identified new opportunities for collaboration among universities, libraries, museums, cultural organizations, and local governments.

As Bikol Wikipedia prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2027, the conference concluded with renewed commitments to expand Wiki Education initiatives, strengthen regional-language Wikimedia communities, and deepen partnerships that promote open knowledge across the country. Participants left with new skills, stronger professional networks, and a shared vision of building a more inclusive, multilingual, and digitally empowered Philippines.

Throughout the three-day conference, Bikol WikiConference 2026 demonstrated that Wiki Education in the Philippines has evolved into a growing movement where educators, students, volunteers, and institutions work together to create, preserve, and freely share knowledge that reflects the country’s rich languages, cultures, and heritage.
