The PhilWiki Community, Sumaro Bikolnon, and PB Writers Inc. jointly celebrated Language Month in a back-to-back event dubbed “Buwan ng Wiki.”
A play of words of Buwan ng Wika, literally: language month, the celebration is observed nationwide each August, the birth month of the Philippine Commonwealth president Manuel Luis Quezon, who is regarded as the Father of the Philippine National Language.
At Raul S. Roco-Naga City Public Library, an editing session was held to enrich Bikol Wiktionary, the free online dictionary and thesaurus that anyone can edit, and other local Wikimedia projects. Participants involved members from the three organizations, comprising teachers, cultural workers, and content editors. They added new definition entries backed with reliable sources on the local Wiktionary, added images on Wikipedia articles lacking illustrations, and transcribed and proofread digitized manuscripts on Wikisource pages.
Participants in the WPWP Philippines editing session added images to Wikipedia articles without any illustrations.
Wikimedia projects such as Wiktionary, the free dictionary and thesaurus; Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia; and Wikisource, the free digital library, are available in the Philippine languages including Central Bikol and Tagalog.
Buwan ng Wiki celebration concluded at the launching of Sumaro Bikolnon’s Dawani cultural magazine at FishCove on August 31st. Together with Sumaro Bikolnon founder Ramon Olaño Jr., co-founder of the Bikol Wikipedia Community, and members of the reorganized cultural organization and the edit-a-thon participants, celebrated the 20,000th article on the Bikol Wikipedia, the most vibrant of the eight Philippine language-based Wikipedia editions.
