As the Wikimedia movement looks ahead to 2030, the Cebu WikiConference 2025 will mark an important step in creating stronger partnerships that bring free knowledge to every corner of the country. This year, Cebu takes the spotlight as the first major Visayas-hosted WikiConference, expanding the reach of the movement across the archipelago.

The Philippine Wikimedia Community User Group proudly announces the upcoming 3-day national gathering of Filipino Wikimedians, open knowledge advocates, educators, and cultural partners from August 22–24, 2025, at the Fairfield by Marriott Cebu Mandaue City.
Anchored on the theme “Weaving Knowledge, Sharing Stories,” the event will serve as a platform to strengthen the Wikimedia movement in the Philippines by gathering community members from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. It will also serve as a venue to promote free knowledge and open culture, highlighting the role of Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wikimedia Commons, and others.
With Cebu as the host, the conference also celebrates the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Visayas and underscores the importance of regional representation in the national Wikimedia movement. The gathering also aims to encourage partnerships with educational institutions, cultural organizations, and local government units, while providing training and knowledge exchange for both new and experienced contributors, focusing on skills such as editing, research, community organizing, and project management.
The program will include presentations exploring the future of Wikimedia in the Philippines and aligning with the Wikimedia 2030 Movement Strategy. Topics include knowledge equity, indigenous languages on Wikimedia, and GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) partnerships.
Outreach activities, namely the Cebu Wikisource Transcribe-a-thon will be conducted at the Cebu City Public Library at 8:00 p.m. on August 23rd, and a Walking tour with Ka Bino at 3:00 p.m. on August 24th. The closing ceremony will take place at the National Museum of the Philippines-Cebu in Cebu City.
The conference is designed to connect contributors, educators, and cultural advocates for future collaborations. Capacity-building workshops will cover editing skills, community leadership, and using Wikimedia platforms in education. Lightning talks will feature innovative community projects from across the Philippines.
The Cebu WikiConference 2025 follows successful community gatherings such as: the Bikol WikiConference 2023 and the WikiCommons PH Conference 2023 held in Naga City, Camarines Sur, in partnership with Commons Photographers User Group and various cultural institutions; and the GLAM Wiki PH Conference 2024 held in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, in partnership with the National Museum of the Philippines-Ilocos. These previous conferences laid the groundwork for stronger collaboration within the Wikimedia network in the Philippines.
Expected participants include active Wikimedia contributors and volunteers in the Philippines, educators, and students exploring open educational resources; representatives from GLAM institutions in the Central Visayas Region; advocates of free knowledge, open access, and digital inclusion; community members interested in starting local WikiClubs or Wikimedia initiatives.
Cebu, often called the “Queen City of the South,” is not only a hub of culture, commerce, and education but also a city with a long history of knowledge exchange and cultural heritage. The Philippine Wikimedia Community underscores its commitment to inclusivity and regional balance.
Join us in celebrating knowledge. Together, let’s keep spreading the spirit of free knowledge!
