Over 100 delegates from East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific region will be gathering for the ESEAP Wikimedia Conference at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia from May 10-12, 2024. Among them are 3 delegates from Department of Education (DepEd) Region V – Bicol.
PhilWiki Community president Maffeth Sto. Tomas, WikiWomen Filipinas program chair Maria Glenda Brioso, and Irvin Sto. Tomas, co-founder of the Alliance for Open Education Collaboration and Bikol Wikipedia admin, will showcase the Wiki Education Philippines program of PhilWiki Community among other initiatives in the country that support the promotion of open educational resources in the academe and beyond.
They will present the Utilization of Wikimedia in Lessons: the Wiki Education initiatives in the Philippines.
This year’s theme is “Collaboration Beyond the Horizon.”
Last August 2023, the Bikol Wikipedia Community in partnership with the PhilWiki Community and the City Government of Naga, organized the inaugural Bikol WikiConference held in Naga City wherein around 40 educators from various educational institutions in the region discussed possible collaborations between Wikipedia and the education sector.
The conference led to the pioneering Central Bicol State University of Agriculture Wiki Education program, the formation of a Wiki Club for senior high school students at DepEd-Naga Cararayan National High School, and the Alliance for Open Education Collaboration of teachers from DepEd-Minalabac, Division of Camarines Sur.
Currently, there are 196 students enrolled for the Wikipedia online training from the College of Education, CBSUA-Calabanga under the directorship of associate professor Jerome M. Hipolito.
During the pandemic, 200 teachers in Bolivia and Morocco and upwards of 700 teachers in the Philippines received 36 hours of training led by the Wikimedia Foundation Education Team in partnership with Wikimedistas de Bolivia, Wikimedia Morocco – ويكيميديا المغرب, the PhilWiki Community User Group, and the DepEd – Division of Pasay.
